The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has established the Virtual, Vision and Visualization Research Lab (UTM ViCubeLab) is a cross-disciplinary research group in computing whose primary focus and activities revolves around the design, implementation and application of computer graphics, vision and virtual environment, simulation and immersive visualization theories.
The goal of the group is to develop resource efficient applications, theories and algorithms that could minimize human involvements in computing as a process as well as reducing the overhead costs associated with the use of computer limited resources. Located in the Faculty of Computing, UTM and currently working on a range of research and project in collaboration with industry and academia.
History
The field of Computer Graphics and Multimedia was established in 1995 as part of the UTM’s effort in positioning the Faculty of Computing as the leading institution for learning computer science. We are the pioneer in computer graphics and multimedia education in Malaysia’s public university and have been offering this unique program continuously since our establishment. Our strength in Virtual reality, Visualization and Computer Vision. This research group (formerly known as Department of Computer Graphics and Multimedia). Our department today was Software Engineering, offers a degree of computer science in graphics and multimedia (Bachelor of Computer Science (Graphics and Multimedia Software).
The first head of Vicubelab was Prof. Zulkifli, he an expert in Image Processing. The second head appointed in 2010 was Assoc. Madya Dr. Mohd Shahrizal Bin Sunar. After he founded Centre of Excellence, MaGICX in 2013, the third head of Vicubelab was appointed, Dr. Md Sah Hj Salam. He remains as recent head of our research group.
Current
Currently, our student body comprises of 208 undergraduates and 32 postgraduates. The Vicubelab members consist of 1 Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 9 senior lecturers and 4 lecturers. With a very low students to members ratio, we hope that the students will enjoy an environment where they can develop and apply their abilities in learning and research undertaking.
